Smart city

The world is becoming smart. From Malmö to Lyon, from Amsterdam to Lausanne, a new vision of the “smart” city is developing thanks to the data collected by connected objects.The city of the future is an entire city – or just a few neighborhoods – that is designed in a global and integrated way, using infrastructure and services derived from information and communication technologies, and more broadly from all forms of innovative technologies. At a time when urban centers consume two-thirds of the Earth’s energy and are home to one out of three inhabitants (two out of three in thirty years), projects abound to adapt to this reality.

Switzerland is a pioneer policy. Since 2012, it has been at the heart of the “Smart City Switzerland” pilot project. This program, set up by the Swiss government and the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), brings together all Swiss universities, as well as public administrations and companies. Together they are rethinking our urban environment. “Smart City Switzerland” counts more than sixty projects in Switzerland. This is an acceleration that reflects the urgency of the problem and allows new scientific collaborations to meet the challenges of smart cities. These challenges are technical, societal, political and security-related.

Smart cities require great communication capabilities with connected objects (iOT). The latter collect a lot of data in order to improve the quality of the services offered to the population of a city or a district, while respecting the privacy of the citizens.And on the other hand, to provide energy efficient services. The challenge of the smart city is not to install sensors on every corner and simply collect data. It’s about using this information for the good of the community. At Softcom, we contribute to this.
